We now offer the Sculptra Collagen Biostimulator treatment: Here’s everything you should know

We are excited to announce that we now offer the Sculptra Collagen Biostimulator treatment at World of Faces. Made by Galderma, it is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid which aids in the stimulation of collagen. It replaces volume and corrects surface to deep facial wrinkles. It is different from other products, specifically because it is a bioactivator not a filler. This treatment can have significant and lasting results on ageing skin. This injectable gets to work in the deepest layers of your skin and increases your body’s own collagen production, typically over the course of two years.

Below we will discus all there is to know about this collagen restoring injectable treatment, by answering some of the most commonly asked questions about Skulptra Aesthetic.

What is Sculptra?

As mentioned above, Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable collagen biostimulator comprised of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) which is a biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production. This unique injectable encourages your body to increase its own collagen production, thereby restoring facial volume lost due to ageing or illness. It can be used to treat deep lines, creases and folds to give a more youthful appearance. It’s also used to treat facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people living with HIV.

How does Sculptra work?

For us to understands how Sculptra works, we need to understand what exactly collagen is and its importance. Collagen is a fibrous protein which is found in the dermal layer of our skin and this layer sits just below the outer layer of the skin. This is where we find the proteins - collagen and elastin. Elastin is responsible for the elasticity of the skin, while collagen is the very fibre of our skin and is the support and structure of the dermis. Over time, as we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen. The result is what we commonly refer to as ‘ageing skin’, or the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging.

Now that we are familiar with what collagen is and how important it is, we can easily identify why Sculptra, which promotes collagen production in the skin, is such an amazing treatment option. When injected, the PLLA stimulates the cells in the dermis layer to produce more collagen fibres.

How is Sculptra administered?

Sculptra is injected into the skin by a licensed skin aesthetician, using a needle or cannula.

What areas does Sculptra treat?

The most common treatment areas are the nasolabial folds or smile lines. The other areas that can be improved by Sculptra treatments include:
- Neck Lines
- Jawline
- Chin wrinkles
- Marionette lines or laugh-lines
- Hollow temples
- Sunken cheeks

Is Sculptra a filler?

While Sculptra is injected similarly to hyaluronic acid gel dermal fillers, they function very differently. Dermal fillers like Restylane-L replenishes volume loss with a gel that holds a shape under the skin. Sculptra on the other hand, acts as a collagen stimulator, with visible results that appear after a few months.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

The ideal candidate for this treatment, includes adults who do not have any allergies to the ingredients found in the product. The treatment is not recommended for those who have a history of  hypertrophic scarring or keloids. Sculptra is best for those who want  a natural-looking, virtually undetectable result.

How long does Sculptra last?

The Sculptra treatment typically takes between three and six months to noticeably take effect. But the best part is, these effects last up to two years.

What do Sculptra before and after results look like?

Sculptra results in firmer, younger-looking skin and there is a noticeable improvement in appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and areas of facial hollowness.

What should I expect from my Sculptra treatment?

Whether or not you will be a candidate for the Sculptra treatment will be determined by a full assessment and consultation. Once your skin aesthetician has established that the Sculptra treatment is suitable for your skin then the procedure may commence. First a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area(s) that is to be injected, then the injectable will be administered using a syringe. The treatment will take approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the number of areas being treated. Depending on how you want your skin to look, more than one treatment may be required.
